The Times News: Boon for Chobani? Greek Yogurt Goes On School Menus

TWIN FALLS • Greek-style yogurt will be on school lunch menus nationwide come this fall, which could lead to a windfall for its manufacturers, including Chobani.

The company runs one of the world’s largest yogurt plants in Twin Falls.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture, which oversees school lunch programs nationwide, started a pilot program offering Greek yogurt as a protein option in the 2013-2014 school year in four states — including Idaho and New York, Chobani’s headquarters. Eight more states were added for 2014-2015.

Now, based on what the USDA says was a positive response — the 12 states ordered more than 700,000 pounds of Greek yogurt in 2014-2015 — the agency is making the option available nationwide.
